The Connecticut Health Foundation (CT Health) is seeking a well-qualified graduate/professional-level student to fill a health policy intern position starting in late August or early September. The ideal candidate is a current graduate/professional student pursing a degree in health policy, public health, law, political science or a related field. Research and Legislative Responsibilities: - Conduct research as assigned by Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs (VPCP). Such research topics may include universal health care reform proposals in Connecticut and around the country; legislation to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities; universal behavioral health screenings for children; and access to and utilization of oral health services.
- Conduct literature reviews, legislative analysis, and interviews with key stakeholders.
- Assist VPCP in researching information for public policy committee meetings and/or presentations.
- In coordination with state and federal legislative monitors, track new and existing legislation and proposed administrative or regulatory changes, focusing on the foundation’s priority areas or as directed by the VPCP. Submit status reports and recommended actions weekly during the state legislative session.
- Attend legislative public hearings and administration news conferences and prepare summary reports as directed by VPCP.
Additional Responsibilities: - Attend all public policy committee meetings, if schedule permits.
- Attend board and committee meetings, if schedule permits.
- Attend monthly staff and departmental meetings, as well as supervisory meetings with VPCP.
- Attend at least two grantee site visits, if schedule permits.
- Participate in the review process of advocacy/policy-related grant proposals, if schedule permits.
- Attend policy-related meetings, conferences, educational briefings, etc.
- In coordination with VPCP and Communications Officers, assist with planning, promoting and executing policy and communications-related events, such as educational briefings and news conferences.
Internship Qualifications: - Strong research skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to cultivate and sustain relationships with diverse coalitions
- Self-starting work habits and ability to work independently
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Significant interest in and understanding of public health and the health issues facing vulnerable populations
- Coursework and/or experience in policy analysis of health related topics
Hours and Salary CT Health’s health policy intern will be required to work at CT Health’s office in New Britain between 10 and 15 hours per week at a rate ranging from $12 to $16 per hour (does not include any benefits). The duration of the internship is flexible depending on the needs of the intern (ranging from two semesters to one or more years).
